1964 - Construction of the Five Gateway Center building was completed. The building features a unique "open scape" concept of engineering, which eliminated the usual type of interior support columns. Support columns are located on the outside and at the central elevator shafts.
1973 - The USW purchased the building as its new International Headquarters from Equitable Life Assurance. USW occupancy was completed in April.
1976 - USW constructs Steelworkers Plaza alongside the headquarters, which included a fountain, benches, and greenery.
1986 - A USW media center was installed on the eighth floor with video editing and satellite capability to receive and transmit video broadcasts throughout the world.
1988 - USW interior offices remodeled.
1989 - Updated fire/life-safety system installed.
1989 - On September 25, the building was dedicated as the I. W. Abel (1908-1987) Building.
1996 - Steelworkers Plaza renovated and fountain removed to provide rally center.
2001 - 13th Floor renovated to construct International Executive Board meeting room and updated Media Center with video conferencing capabilities.
2006 - The dedication of the 2nd floor training areas as the George and Jane Becker Collective Bargaining and Political Mobilization Center .
2006 - The dedication of the 13th floor as the Bernard Kleiman Conference Center .
