District 1 Women of Steel Conference

I would like to take this time to thank the Executive board and our membership for allowing me to accept the invitation from District 1 Women of Steel Coordinator, Michelle Laghetto, to attend the District 1 Women of Steel conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Women of Steel conference was attended by about 80 sisters and a couple brothers.  I arrived about 12noon on Monday and attended the afternoon conference which entailed a review of our presidential election and the results which was presented by Ike Gittlen.  Ann Flener gave a presentation on the International Local Union Officer Election process.  That evening there was a really nice auction to benefit District 1 Women’s scholarships (very successful I might add they raised close to $4000.00).

Tuesday started with anyone who wished to make comments was free to do so. Direcor Dave McCall also ralked about the election and all the contributions that Steelworkers had made and about the red states going blue including District 7’s state of Indiana.

The program continued with Susan Knight, Director of the Cincinnati Nature Center and she discussed the Blue-Green Alliance, Fair Trade and the Sierra Club.  She also thanked the Steelworkers for all our work on the Toxic Trade issued and how we were responsible in her opinion on bringing and keeping it in the media. My presentation on Los Mineros was next.

The sisters at District 1 were generous and supportive and I was able to bring back $407.00 to benefit Los Mineros and the continuing strike in its 17 month.  Alan McDougall was next on the agenda and he presented an overview of the (E.R.T.) Emergency Response Training.  Mid morning on Wednesday I headed back.

Thank you for allowing me to help others, because you know we are in this together!
